n. / Safety and operations
Definition
PII redaction is removing or masking personal data, such as names, emails, phone numbers and card numbers, from text before it is stored or sent on.
In more detail
Traces contain prompts and outputs, which often include personal details. Redacting before storage reduces risk and helps meet privacy rules. Pattern matching catches formats like emails and card numbers, but names and free-text details are harder, so decide what you must remove and check the results on samples.
Example
The text "Call Anna on 555-0134" is stored as "Call [NAME] on [PHONE]", so traces stay useful without exposing the person.
