n. / Safety and operations
Definition
An alert rule is a condition that notifies you when a metric crosses a threshold, such as the error rate rising above 5% or daily cost passing a set amount.
In more detail
Good rules are tied to something you will act on and use a window long enough to ignore single blips. Too many noisy alerts get ignored, so start with a few that matter: failure rate, cost spikes and latency. Each alert should link to the runs that caused it.
Example
A rule fires when more than 5% of runs fail over 15 minutes. The message links to the failing runs, grouped by the tool that errored.
