n. / Safety and operations
Definition
Self-hosted observability means running your tracing and monitoring tools on infrastructure you control instead of using a vendor's cloud. Your trace data stays inside your own environment.
In more detail
Teams choose it for data control, compliance or cost at high volume. The trade-off is operating the system yourself: storage, upgrades, backups and scaling. Check which parts of a tool can be self-hosted and which still depend on a managed service.
Example
A healthcare company runs its trace store in its own cloud account so prompts containing patient details never leave its network.
