n. / Agents and tools
Definition
An orchestrator is the part of an agent system that decides which agent or tool runs next, passes work between them and combines their results. It can be ordinary code or an agent itself.
In more detail
In a multi-agent setup the orchestrator is where routing mistakes happen: sending a task to the wrong specialist, losing context in the handoff, or running steps in sequence that could run in parallel. Tracing the orchestrator as the parent span makes each worker's contribution visible underneath it.
Example
A support orchestrator sends billing questions to a billing agent and technical ones to a diagnostics agent, then merges their answers into one reply.
