n. / Prompts and context
Definition
Prompt versioning is keeping a numbered history of each prompt so you know which wording produced which result and can roll back a change that made things worse.
In more detail
A one-word edit can change quality, cost and tool use. Recording the prompt version on every run lets you compare versions on real traffic and tie a regression to the change that caused it. Combine it with an evaluation set so each new version is scored before it ships.
Example
Version 14 of the refund prompt adds a rule about partial refunds. Runs tagged v14 show a higher success rate than v13, so you keep it.
